It is also a novel from which two films were made. I have never seen the film.

Brighton Rock still not the sweet
Brian May wrote "Brighton Rock" in 1973 before the completion of Queen II, but time restrictions meant that the song was not ready for inclusion on an album until Sheer Heart Attack. The title is something of a pun: Brighton rock is a long, cylindrical sugar candy traditional to that seaside resort. The term was also iconic in UK pop culture as the title of a dark Graham Greene thriller/noir novel later adapted into a successful film starring Richard Attenborough as a teenage sociopath.
The song, the first track on the album tells the story of two young lovers meeting in Brighton on a public holiday. Jenny cannot linger because she is afraid her mother will find out "how I spent my holiday", but afterwards "writes a letter every day"; Jimmy, eager on the day, is not so happy with her "nothing can my love erase": now he is the one afraid of discovery by "my lady". The song was originally intended to be a duet but Freddie Mercury ended up doing both female and male parts of the vocals, and Brian May sings lead harmony vocals on the line "Oh rock of ages, do not crumble love is breathing still, oh lady moon shine down a little people magic if you will."

Brighton Rock not the sweet
Pinkie Brown is a small-town hoodlum whose gang runs a protection racket based at Brighton race course. When Pinkie orders the murder of a rival, Fred, the police believe it to be suicide. This doesn't convince Ida Arnold, who was with Fred just before he died, and she sets out to find the truth. She comes across naive waitress Rose, who can prove that Fred was murdered. In an attempt to keep Rose quiet Pinkie marries her. But with his gang beginning to doubt his ability, and his rivals taking over his business, Pinkie starts to become more desperate and violent.

Rock comes in many shapes and sizes
A seaside sweet shop owner has reacted angrily after claiming he was told to remove rude rock from his window by the police. Shops in Southport, Merseyside, have sold phallus or breast-shaped rock for years.
But it is claimed police on Friday ordered them to remove some of the saucy sweets from public view.
The shop owner says it is a waste of police time.
Back room
The manager of the Southport Rock Shop, who did not wish to give his name, said: "Two male officers came in here and ordered me to take all the rock willies out of the window.
"They said the rock boobs could stay because they hadn't received any complaints about them.
"They were very abrupt with me and said I could still sell the rock willies from a back room.
Legal action
"But I haven't got a back room so I have had to put a note up advising customers that we do stock them and they should ask if they want one.
"I am absolutely fuming. I can't believe, with all the youth crime and shoplifting that goes on here, the police are choosing to spend their time worrying about rock willies."
The manager added that store owner Graham Cook was considering taking legal action.
A spokesman for Merseyside Police said they had no record of the incident.

Todays topic: Rock
Lettered rock. A cylinder of hard, boiled sugar about a foot long and an inch in diameter, pink on the outside, white on the inside. But look at the end of it - there's a ring of bright red letters which spell out the name of the seaside resort where you bought it and which miraculously runs throughout the length of this confection.
How on earth do they do that?
